Buyer's guide
Nursing home management software in India: a buyer's guide for 10 to 50-bed hospitals
Most private hospitals in India are nursing homes: ten to fifty beds, a doctor-owner, and more work than people. This guide covers what software for that hospital has to do, where nursing homes usually lose money, and how to switch without stopping the wards.

First, what a nursing home means here
In India, a nursing home is usually a small private hospital, not an elder-care residence. It runs an OPD, a few wards, an OT, often a pharmacy and a small lab, and admits patients for surgery, maternity and medical care. Software built for old-age homes, or for a single-doctor clinic, will not fit it.
Seventy-seven percent of Indian private hospitals have fifty beds or fewer, so this is the hospital most people are actually treated in, and the one most hospital software is least built for.
The modules a nursing home actually needs
A nursing home needs a full hospital system in a small size. Check that every row below is included in the price you are quoted, not listed as an extra.
| Module | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| OPD and appointments | Registration, tokens and follow-ups feed the admissions |
| IPD and bed board | Admissions, transfers, deposits and a live view of every bed |
| OT | Scheduling, notes, implants and consumables billed to the admission |
| Pharmacy and stores | Batch, expiry, GST and the Schedule H1 and X registers |
| Laboratory | Orders from the wards, reports and critical-value alerts |
| Billing and GST | One ledger per admission, interim bills and UPI at the counter |
| Insurance and TPA | Pre-auth, claims and remittance for cashless patients |
| Nursing and MAR | Vitals, medication rounds and handover, ideally on a phone |
| Statutory registers | Birth, death, OT, MLC, MTP and PC-PNDT generated from the record |
Billing: where most nursing homes lose money
Revenue leaks in the gaps between books. Advances are recorded in one place and pharmacy issues in another, OT consumables are used but never billed, room rent is not re-rated when a patient moves to the ICU and back, and discounts are given at the counter without anyone approving them.
The fix is one ledger per admission: every deposit, pharmacy issue, test, OT charge and day of room rent posts to the admission as it happens, a ward change re-rates the stay automatically, and discounts have limits by role. Ask each vendor to show you a ward transfer and a pharmacy return on a live bill.
Registers and inspection day
A nursing home is inspected on its registers. If they are assembled from files the night before, something will be missing. The software should generate them from the record itself: birth and death registers, the OT register, MLC cases, MTP with the second-RMP requirement, PC-PNDT Form F for imaging, and the Schedule H1, X and narcotics registers from pharmacy sales.
Rolling it out without stopping the hospital
Nursing homes cannot close for a week to change software. The safest rollout goes department by department while the old system runs in parallel for a fixed window.
- Week one: masters, rate lists, registration and OPD billing
- Then pharmacy and stores, with an opening stock count
- Then IPD billing and the bed board, with open admissions migrated
- Then nursing and EMR, ward by ward
- Cut over fully once the day close matches on both systems
What nursing home software should cost
Compare quotes over three years, counting setup, migration, training, hardware and messaging, as the pricing guide explains. As a reference, Curanto's Nursing Home plan covers up to 30 beds with unlimited doctors and users for ₹5,999 a month on yearly billing, excluding GST, with every department, insurance and TPA, and the AI scribe and Medi under a monthly AI budget.
Questions to ask every vendor
Take these into each demo and ask to see the answer on screen.
- Show me a ward transfer on a running bill, then an interim bill.
- Show me OT consumables and implants reaching the final bill.
- Generate the MLC and death registers from sample data.
- Switch off the internet: what still works at the desk and on the ward?
- What does it cost to add ten beds or two doctors next year?
- Who trains our staff, and who do we call at eleven at night?
Questions
Frequently asked questions.
What is the best nursing home management software in India?
The one that covers OPD, IPD, OT, pharmacy, lab, billing, TPA and the statutory registers on one record, keeps working through outages, and costs what a 10 to 50-bed hospital can sustain. Test each vendor on your own workflows rather than a feature list.
Is nursing home software different from elder-care software?
Yes. In India a nursing home is a small hospital, so it needs hospital software. Elder-care and assisted-living software manages residents and care plans, not admissions, OTs and GST billing.
How long does it take to switch?
It depends on the hospital and how much data moves. Rolling out department by department with a parallel run keeps the hospital working throughout; plan the cutover once the day close matches on both systems.
Do we need a server?
Not with cloud software. Curanto runs in the browser, the desktop app and the staff app, with the database hosted in India and an encrypted local copy on each device for outages.
